Cycling the fever tree forest in Makuleke

BIKE THE WILDERNESS

Experience and appreciate true wilderness on your own mountain bike on a 3 or 4 night guided trail through Makuleke. It is not a fast or competitive cycling event and you are not going to exceed 20km/h. Think of a walking trail, on a mountain bike in a Big Five area, that allows you to explore further than walking.

BEAUTIFUL DIVERSITY

You stop frequently to enjoy the ecological diversity of Makuleke. You will explore the massive floodplains, wetland pans, fever tree forest, baobab groves and ancient animal tracks.

SPECTACULAR GORGES

Climb to the top of the gorges for spectacular views out over the bush towards the mountains and Mozambique.

DODGE THE HERDS

The Big Five are attracted here by the perennial water in the drier winter months, when there are large herds of elephant and buffalo to circumnavigate. These cooler dry months of April to September are best for cycling, but the trail can be available in October for cyclists who understand that it will be hot.

LOST & HIDDEN PLACES

A low density of camps and vehicles make it a perfect place to get lost and enjoy one of the few truly hidden wildernesses in Africa. Knowledge of and access to these ‘lost’ and ‘hidden’ locations make it a biker’s nirvana.

EXPERIENCE, FITNESS, KIT

The trails suits nature enthusiasts who are fit enough to spend 4 – 5 hours in the saddle and ride 25 to 35 kilometres each day. Most are on dirt game-drive roads, with off-road sections on game-paths to the extent that the conditions allow for safe off-road cycling. You will need mountain biking experience and skills, as well as the equipment to undertake the trails.
