Ngala operates two locations within the Timbavati on the edge of the Kruger Park. These are at a similar latitude to Satara and Singita Lebombo, both of which are well-known for the density of lion activity, and they all similarly share the characteristic plains of the central Kruger. Wild dogs often roam here in the large expanse of the Reserve.

Wild dogs on Game Drive at Ngala

The Timbavati is known for its large herds of roaming elephants, along with the established presence of naturally-occuring white lions in the Reserve. Unlike the better known destinations in the Kruger, Ngala benefits from a much lower level of tourist development and traffic, and benefits from the privleges of private ownership (off-road traversing, night drives, more walking oppoerunities).

Suite interior at Ngala Safari Lodge

Tucked under a canopy of mopane and tamboti trees, Ngala Safari Lodge boasts twenty classic thatched Cottages, including three Family Cottages with interleading rooms, and the spacious Family Suite. They are colonial in ambience, with nostalgic Safari memorabilia throughout.

Creamy soft linen on curtained beds, soft tinted prints and etchings combine with the evocative smell of thatch to carry the classic safari atmosphere into your private Cottage. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide views of your surroundings; spacious private verandas offer a perfect setting to savour an exclusive dinner. An ensuite bathroom, complete with an outdoor shower, provides the opportunity to refresh or unwind.

Protected by a living canopy of immense mopane and tamboti trees, &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge carves out a set of intimate, elegant spaces sheltered in harmonious seclusion by the thick vegetation.

Nature is never far at Ngala Safari Lodge, with breakfast and lunch served in the shade of an enormous weeping boere bean tree. A walled courtyard provides a sheltered space to indulge in sumptuous cuisine, while the boma creates a dramatic setting for fire-lit dinners.

Secret nooks and crannies with cushy sofas are ideal for quiet hours of contemplation in the leafy shade, and at night, a myriad lanterns and candles peep out between the boughs of trees, shining out a promise of warmth and comfort.

A timeless, unhurried atmosphere, combined with the quaint traditions of a bygone era, creates an aura of romance and nostalgia. This old-world haven in the midst of the African bush charms with its colonial antiques, silver cutlery and crystal glassware.

Here, style and grace mingle faultlessly with the rugged natural beauty of the setting, as manicured lawns give way to dense mopane thickets and wild animals saunter down to drink at the waterhole.

The lodge’s fun-filled WILDChild adventure programme makes it the ideal place for families.

While away the hours at the pool area for an afternoon by the poolside spent sipping on your favourite beverage or unwind with a good book. Whilst you’re there, steal a moment for blissful relaxation as you indulge in a massage or wellness treatment at the lodge spa. A well-equipped fitness centre beckons to the more actively inclined.

Chic and contemporary camping at Ngala

Offering sophisticated camping (glamping) at its best, Ngala Tented Camp's nine luxurious safari tents overlook the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River with spectacular views. While the Camp never lets you forget that you are in the wild, there is nothing primitive about this chic and contemporary destination. Each tent, mounted on stilts on a solid base, Meru-style, combines simple elegance, sophistication and comfort with the romance of canvas - a naturally luxurious combination. Big night sounds, and flickering lanterns lighting the camp grounds, mingle with the simple sophistication of polished wooden decks, textured fabrics and clean lines.

Caught between the dense riverine forest and the sandy river bed, extensive decks give onto the view, a frontline perspective of game wandering down to drink. A rim flow pool mimicks the contours of the river bed, inviting you in for a refreshing dip. For your own creature comforts, there are outdoor showers and a massage sala overlooking the river.

Plush armchairs allow a lazy afternoon idly gazing into the river bed. At night, when tales of the day’s adventure are shared and compared, a roaring fireplace springs to life. The stirring scents of Africa’s famous spices waft up from a meal shared in a spectacular setting – among islands or reeds in the dry Timbavati riverbed, beneath the canopy of massive trees or on the expansive deck.

Night drives and extended Walking Safaris, activities rarely on offer in other Reserves, add to the sense of wilderness here. Ngala is a true safari experience where guests go to bed to the sounds of lion calling, safely cosseted in modern tented suites and pampered with the warm hearted service that embodies the soul of Africa.
