MAJOR FENCED PRIVATE RESERVES
ENCLOSED AREAS ADJACENT OR CLOSE TO KRUGER
Do not dismiss these excellent major Private Reserves. The first thing to note is that they are extensive in size. Makalali is the biggest and pretty much the same size as the Eastern Cape's largest Private Reserve, Shamwari. Combine Kapama (12,000 Ha) and Thornybush (13,000 Ha) and you get the same result. These 25,000 Hectare (62,000 acre) areas compare favourably to destinations such as Pilanesberg (the entire National park is 57,200 Hectares) and Madikwe in the north (75,000 Hectares).
Major fenced Reserves - Kapama and Thornybush
One striking difference with these Reserves is that you have the potential to traverse the whole of the area in search of viewings. The luxury Lodges in the Sabi Sand, Timbavati and other areas unfenced with the Kruger are themselves limited in the areas that they can access: 10,000 Hectares is a large traverse in Sabi Sand.
